I am wondering, if I choose "Keep until I Delete" on Tivo and tell it
to record 3 episodes say M-F, will it record Mon, Tue, Wed and stop
recording until I delete or on Thurs will it delete Mon and record
Thursday's show?

If not, is there a way to do this? Basically, certain shows (like
news) I like to keep just the last 2 or 3 and want them to overwrite
earlier ones if I don't watch them.

So you are saying that regardless of the Keep until choice, old
episodes
will be replaced by newer ones unless you specifically tell it to keep
that episode after it is recorded?

Old episodes don't automatically get replaced by new ones unless you are
using the "Keep At Most x Episodes" If the only thing you ever record is
"The OC" and you have it set to "keep at most 3 episodes", you will never
have more than 3 episodes in the now playing list. If you mark two of those
episodes to "keep until I delete" you'll have five episodes in the now
plaing list at any given time.

If you have a 140 hour Tivo you could record new episodes only of "The OC"
for 6 years and every episode would still be on the Now Playing List
regardless of the keep until date because the Tivo never needed to delete
anything to make room

"Keep Until At Least... is not actually set in stone. If your Tivo needs
the space it will delete the recordings with the oldest keep until date even
if that oldest date is today.

If you have a 14hr Tivo set to record at best Quality (4hrs 17min) and
tomorrow (6/8) you record '1hr drama #1' then '1hr drama #2' then '2hr
movie' then '1hr comedy special' the first recording will be deleted to make
room for the last one even though it was labeled as being saved until at
least 6/10. The recording history will state that this show was deleted
earlier than expected. If all shows are marked as KUID, the last one won't
record due to a lack of available space.

Got it? or are you more confused?

When you choose SUID it is not included in the # of episodes to record
calculation. If you have it set to 3 and when the first one records you
SUID, you will get three more and the 4th one will cause the oldest one
without SUID designation to be deleted.

Yup, it will record 3 then stop (till you nuke 1 of them to make room). If
you want keep until I delete and it keep recording new ones, then set keep
at most to All.

Yeah, don't set keep until I delete. It will record new and delete oldest.

Seth's head is up his ass ...again.

No. any programs marked with the "keep until I delete" flag are not included
in the "keep at most 3 episodes" count.
If you mark monday's episode KUID you'll also get tues, wed, and thurs, but
when friday records tues will be deleted.

Set the "keep at most x episodes" to whatever you want (1,2,3,4,5,10,all
episodes)

Oops, I got the first part of my statement backwards, my bad. But the
second half was correct. 50/50.

Exactly why does that deserve such a nasty response?

What do you mean regardless? The Tivo obeys the 'Keep At Most' setting
but does NOT count programs that have been marked SUID. I have Jeopardy
set to KAM 1 but I have 3 in my NPL, 2 of which are marked SUID.

Actually his post in this thread at 9:53 EST was suprisingly helpful.
However, it does seem to be an exception.

Does it matter if the recording options of the season pass are
set to KUID? (as opposed to manually changing a KUSN to KUID)
If one creates a season pass for David Letterman
with KAM 5 and KUID, would this end up recording as many shows
as would fit on the disk(s) - provided they were not manually
deleted? In other words, does setting KUID effectively nullify
the KAM 5 setting?

Well, I guess that clears up all up, somehow.

Upside, I've got my own personal proofreader.

Why not do the experiment? Set recording options for KUID and
keep at most 2 episodes. Then see what happens.

If you change the retention setting for any program recorded from
a Season Pass that specific recording is not included in the SP
Keep at Most number and is no longer subject to the SP options.

I guess what I want to know is that if I say KUID, does that mean keep
5 episodes (assuming I say keep 5) deleting the oldest for a new one
or keep the first 5 until I delete one and no longer record any under
that season pass?

Keep Until I Delete means just that - the show will not be deleted until
you manually delete it. So KUID KAM 5 will record up to 5 episodes and
then do nothing until you delete one, i.e. it will not delete the oldest
to record more episodes. If you want it to always record the latest 5
episodes use KAM 5 with Space Needed instead of KUID.

Yes, it does.

If you have an SP (or an ARWL) set to "Keep at Most" 3 (as an example) and
"Space Needed" (for "Keep Until"), then the behavior would be to
record 3 episodes then start replacing old episode, so you would always have
at most 3 episodes from that SP (or ARWL). You could have less if you have
manually deleted episodes.

But, if you mark an episode as "I Delete" (for "Keep Until"), it divorces it
from that SP, so it is no longer counted against that SPs total saved.

If, however, the SP has the "I Delete" setting, then the episodes are all
automatically set to not delete, but they remain connected to the SP, so
if there are 3 on disk, a fourth will not be recorded.

If you look, you'll see that it *won't* be labelled as being saved until at
least 6/10 in this situation. TiVo would mark it as being "close to
available for deletion" (yellow dot in NPL) as soon as it is recorded, and
"available for deletion" (yellow exclamation point in NPL) very soon after
that.

I have an SP for "Jeopardy" set to KAM one episode, and the Monday-Friday
episodes all say they will be kept only one day, while the Saturday episode
says it will be kept two days.
