Hah! That's bloody brilliant. I wish him the best of luck. I think it's ridiculous that people lost a lot of legitimate data on mega upload too.

I've never used Megaupload for anything but still am so glad that Dotcom got lucky enough to survive the bull****. I'm not pro-piracy but I in no way desire governments and corporations to oversteps their bounds and think they are the law globally.

Please go away Kim Dotcom. You ran a shady website, broke some laws, and made millions off of other's people's works. I don't mind piracy when nobody is making any kind of monetary profit off it, but you, Mr. Dotcom, are scum!

He isn't lucky. The DoJ just made the mistake of going after an actual intelligent criminal instead of someone's granny or some college student this time. Kim did not back down and was probably prepared for this day long before the DoJ was. You see, most of what they try and do isn't actually legal, such as extraditing him from another country on flimsy charges. People just back down like cowards under the threat of jail time and give up to the force of attorneys and the DoJ. Kim is actually quite safe where he is, NZ doesn't want to lose one of their richest residents. What do they care about the US? Even in the worst case, Kim can flee to Hong Kong. Good luck digging him out of there.

Between this and TPB moving to the cloud, the war on piracy is only losing more ground. Adapt or die, it isn't a war the industry will win.

I'm confused how the website can implement an automated DMCA takedown interface for copyright owners when the content is encrypted. Of course, that's the problem with the DMCA, you don't have to actually prove you own the content. I like the concept of this new site, but I'm sure the MPAA and RIAA lawyers are already getting ready.

"if the government comes into a data center and rapes it"
I laughed at this creative choice of words.

Kim Dotcom, yeah the guy is a douchebag. But that doesn't make what the government did okay. Both sides here are at the wrong.

I live in NZ and Dotcom is not out of the woods yet. It will all depend on how far our judges are prepared to overlook the farcical nature of his arrest and various other illegalities. Our Government is not happy with Dotcom because he is sort of the Midas of Death for our ruling party and one of the Governments support parties has been destroyed by Dotcom as well. I suspect that the US will not succeed in its quest for extradition because illegal spying, illegal warrants and illegal handling of evidence is a bit much for our judiciary to allow IMHO.

I'm sorry I don't respect Kim at all. The site he created was great, but the way he manipulated people and what happened behind the scenes was not very great. Honestly I'd appreciate better development of decentralization of file distribution. Centralization is a weakness to these models websites have.

Torrents are just as unsafe as are file sharing sites, if the government really wants to know who is downloading something from a torrent or a site, they could simply wire tap without notice. We all know that most government do as they please in some situations. I know Kim is innocent in many ways, and the way the investigation was disgusting and a terrible thing. Even the court case was ridiculous, I believe he should get charged fines for all the manipulation. Jail time is inappropriate, he just violated a few minor laws that even I have violated. No need to make a huge deal and raid him and his company.

Honestly I'm yet to see helicopters and a swat team raid my apartment for over 100TB(Not GB) of illegal content on my servers.

mega upload wasnt even part opf teh piracy thing the VASt majority of megaupload users clearly used the site for their own LEGITIMATE content ,. not pirated stuff. That's what is f---ed up about the fbi's raid on it. i personally want my private files back , the fbi STOLE my files in that raid and nothing i had ever uploaded to megaupload was pirated it was all original art work or music i created. there are countless users like me that had oriignal stuff lost because of FBI playing personal security force for the MPAA.

This is one of the reasons why you do NOT depend on one set of backups. Always double or even triple your backup sources.

Yeah it sucks for those who lost their files due to the RAID but it happens.

It happen because governments are corrupt to succumb to pressure put by lobby groups, like RIAA,... At least for a week they should have given people the change to download their legal files.

Perhaps I should sue the US government for illegal appropriation of copyrighted material. Of course this would never work because I'm not backed by giants like the MPAA and so on...

Megashares? Seriously? That place has been in a steady decline for some time now. It was great two years ago but those people can't get their act together.

Look, I don't really know too much about the legalities of Kim's arrest nor the evidence that may or may not have existed but anyone who's ever seen a video hosted on Megavideo should damn well know what they do isn't entirely legal. Before you even get to the video you're presented with a deceptive pornography ad that's mocked up to look like a play button and half the time even if you click just said button a new tab will open to whatever nefarious site was being advertised.

That's handled by Megavideo, not the content hoster. As a result I'm inclined to side with the prosecutors on this one.

here is the giant middle finger to the RIAA
Dotcom is also preparing to launch a new music service called Megabox. The service promises to transform the music industry through allowing artists to sell their music and earn 90 percent of the revenue generated via transactions.

if this works he can do the same to the MPAA

hope it works and kills both the RIAA and MPAA

I am sure that the MPAA lawyers will take the new MEGA to court over "facilating copyright infringment" they will argue that if the files are legit and not incriminating then there is no reason to encrypt the files and Dotcom is providing the facilitation of encryption with helping people to avoid being caught with sharing copyright files. They could also do a sting operation with uploading copyright files and then send a DMCA takedown notice to get them removed and if they are not removed then they could do MEGA for refusing to comply with DMCA notices. I wish the MEGA every success and hope it becomes a reall success but i am sure that the MPAA and there lawyers will be hotfooting it behind him waiting for something that is suspicious to pounce on.
