Sitting in the garden today I thought my iPAQ 3870 was on its way out. It
was taking an age to do anything. Menus appeared in slo-mo and applications
were just stalling. The thing was, it would occasionally burst into life,
but not for long.
Soft resetting did nothing and I was resigned to a hard reset when I
thought, 'I wonder if it's the sunlight?' - and, ah heck me, it was.
I know that bright light can prevent IR data transfers working properly, but
I didn't realise that sunlight could be interpreted by a PDA as a data
source. My iPAQ was obviously feverishly trying to 'discover' the source of
an IR signal, hence the sluggishness.
Is this a problem common to all PDA's? I fixed things by disabling the IR
service but that's a bit of a pain, because I like to link to my laptop
without having to do anything more that set them side-by-side. I suppose
that one benefit will be that I save some power...
TIA
