Lagging/Spiking sound when playing audio

Laptop makes lagging sound/ STUTTERING.

When playing music on WMP or from a browser.

"Brrrrrrrrrt" noise. Happens very often and randomly. (half a second)
Video playback is fine, no screen abnormalities at all. Just sound.
The audio still plays just with irritating lag noises.
Sounds the same as if you set the tempo ultra-fast on a DAW with a snare.

Can't be hard drive lag, it's an SSD, Can't be CPU either as i put a faster one in it.
Can't be ram either because ive put new ram in it.
Not on-board sound because i use a usb interface (Focusrite 2i2) [sound still happens with onboard].

the laptop is 9 years old though lol. failing circuitry on the motherboard perhaps?

It could well be the sound card, or even the speaker(s). To see if it is the speakers or not, try using headphones and see if you still get the problem. If you don't, then it is probably the speaker(s).

Also, If your speaker/headphones aren't working, try the following...

1. Go to "Control Panel".
2. Click on "Sound".
3. Make sure you are on the "Playback" tab.
4. Click on the device you are trying to fix.
5. Now click the "Configure" button and follow the prompts. (Be sure you also click the "Test" button.)
6. Once that is complete, click the "Properties" button.
7. When you are done with your changes, in "Properties", click "Apply" and then "OK".
8. Then click "OK", again, on the main "Sound window".

If none of the above fixes it, I would say it is probably the sound card then.

that's what happens, I'm thinking it's a virus since I always have to reset the adapter to avoid facing this problem
