I'm looking into picking up a new laptop sometime this month, and I've narrowed my choices down to two models:

Lenovo has a deal on their site to get a decently spec'd G510 for $650, down from what they claim is normally $1050 (]http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/lenovo/g-series/g510/).

Alternatively, Amazon is offering an extremely similar but refurbished Z510 for $10 less. Being a member of the Z series, it has improved built quality and a higher resolution screen.(http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Z510-Laptop-Computer-Generation/dp/B00I93CSQO/).

Is it worthwhile to go for a slightly higher quality laptop in exchange for being able to buy new?

what do you plan on using laptop for mainly.

Refurbished is a good deal if you buy from a reputable seller and if it comes with a warranty/money back guarantee of some sort so you can test/check the laptop to see if there are any concerns

this may be off-topic: if you want a computer for general stuff that is a good bang for buck Id recommend bidding on this laptop for $225

This is an item from ebay. Id try bidding $225 on it and then buying an ssd like a crucial mx100 which can be found for $70 or $105 on ebay depending if you want 128GB or 256Gb version and swapping the hdd out.

For ~$300 you can have a decent laptop that is speedy with an ssd

I would look at getting a refurbished laptop as refurbished means that all the broken parts has been replaced and the laptop is pretty much brand new and is great if you can pick up a good deal. But as kaliz said make sure you get a good guarantee and possibly some warranty. Otherwise a refurbished laptop has no problems. Even apple sell refurbished products, just type refurbished into their search bar.

I appreciate the recommendation, but I want something powerful. I'd be using the laptop for assorted tasks, including occasional gaming (when I don't have my desktop available), so I want it to be able to handle whatever I need it to.

Although I don't know much about the sellers of the refurbished laptops, I do know that they come with manufacturer warranties of at least 6 months, possibly a year. My question is whether or not It's a good idea to go refurbished when I can get a brand new laptop that's only slightly worse for about the same price.
