I am a Architecture student and just want some other peoples opinion on what computer setup is better for run CAD and 3d programs.

The two setups that I like right now are:

Dell Mobile Precision M6600
Intel Core i7-2960XM Extreme Quad Core 2.70GHz 8MB,
16.0GB, DDR3-1600 SDRAM, 4 DIMM,
NVIDIA Quadro 5010M with 4GB GDDR5,
750GB 7200rpm Hard Drive
Windows 7 Ultimate
Intel Centrino Advanced -N + WiMAX 6250
512GB 2.5" Dell Mobility Solid State

EON17-S
Intel Extreme Core i7 3940XM Quad-Core 3.0GHz , 8MB Cache
32GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz (4 X 8GB)
Single 4GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M
256GB Crucial M4
Genuine MS Windows 8 Professional 64-Bit Edition
Killer Wireless-N 1103
(2) 750GB SATA 3.0Gb/s, 7200RPM,

FYI: I use Rhino, AutoCad, 3dsMax, and Maya

i'll choose the second one.
however, the first one has a ssd hard disk, which is much faster when you run 3ds Max or Maya.

ssd hard disk is good for loading data.

so, still up to you!

They both have a solid slate, the M4 is a solid slate just forgot to type it.
So if the 680m is better for rendering would it be good to get 2 in sli? Or is sli mainly used for gaming?

SLI boosts the performance up to 4 times that of the single card. If you're really going to be working with such high end stuff, then it makes sense. But I'm not entirely sure you'll need 2 680Ms...
