Was the laptop off, closed does not mean off? What were you trying to do, most laptops the hdmi is Output only so I'm not sure what you were trying to do. If the laptop was on at the time I think there is a chance you damaged the GPU

Like sizzling said, you may have toasted something, as the vast majority of laptops only have HDMI outputs, not inputs (except for a few older Alienware laptops, I think). Which exact model of laptop do you have?
