So my Aspire E5-521 doesn't detect the headphone replacement cable i got for my headphones (http://www.monsterproducts.com/Headphone_Replacement_Cable#productDetailsTabs1)

To be more specific, i can plug this cord into my phone and it automatically switches to the mic on the cord but my laptop doesnt recognise it at all. It works as a headphone cord and i can hear sound but the mic doesnt show up in playback devices and i cant find any way to use this mic.

Well it should be a combo jack. I looked up the laptop. Says... Headphone/microphone combo jack. You may want to test other microphones and/or headphone/mic combo in the jack and see if you get the same problem. If so, the jack may be damaged.

It may well be that the jack you are plugging into is output only and not input/output, which is what would be needed to have both headphones and a microphone run from it. I would look at the jack. It should have a little icon by it. If it is only headphones, and not showing a mic, then it is output only.

To work around this, and keep the things you have, you would need to get a 3.5mm to USB adapter so that you could use it through the USB port. Like this... https://www.amazon.com/LZYCO-External-connector-Headphone-Microphone/dp/B018YV3ALM/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1486193340&sr=8-9&keywords=3.5mm+to+usb+adapter

However if the port does show that it should allow for a mic as well, then you may well need the port replaced.

It does not show up with or without hidden or disabled devices on.

the cord has a button that pauses/plays audio but that doesn't seem to work on my laptop either
