Laptop for Art and Design

I am looking for an ultrabook/ laptop for art and design work and probably rendering in the future. I don't want the price of it to exceed £1200 preferably but I could stretch a bit possibly. I have heard that Macbooks are good for this kind of work but when I have done some research it seems that some Windows laptops have better specs for the same price. What would you recommend? I would like to use the laptop possibly also for gaming but that is not that important as I have my computer for that.

Would the M500m in P40 work well Autodesk Maya or would it be a bit weak?

Also About the software. It looks like the software is very expensive, like £140 a month. Is there a way to get it cheaper for or was I reading the wrong thing?

No you cannot get the software, for cheaper, most of the time getting any software especially big name ones like autodesk can only be achieved directly from the company without risk of getting scammed. You pay for the support.

As to the 500m, it will handle tasks but it is a ddr3 chip, meaning it is going to be a lot slower but still fast enough to handle any graphics tasks. Games not so much unless its a older game like civ 5 or something.

I have a gt 940m in my laptop and its basically the same specs roughly as the 500m and it can play older games like skyrim,civ,csgo,dota. etc but on very reduced settings around 1366x768 or 1280x720 on low-med

I see. Are there any software like Autodesk Maya which you could recommend which is cheaper but still good. As paying over £100 a month is not for me.

If you want the professional grade software, at least the software that counts you really wont find anything cheaper. I mean options do exist but im not the best person to ask when it comes to what other alternatives exist because i dont use anything else.

If you have the school ID and whatnot to put in then yeah, i think its based of student id number and you have to put in some personal information to verify that you are a student.

So I have finished actually downloading it and it seems like I have the student version of the program. I had an account from last year and I just had to write in the product key and it worked. So I guess thats good.

Cool, the p50 should be good even the p70 basemodel. But of you want the ability to draw then get the p40 but keep in mind the p50 will handle games better. I know that's not the primary reason for buying but keep that in mind. Make sure you get the 72 watt hour battery it's extra $15. And will give you a good amount of juice.

Its a tough decision. As I like the idea of P40 yoga but P50 just has more power but it isnt going to be that comfortable to draw on as on the p40

Yeah same, its really up to what you want to sacrifice.

Yes, but you will have to verify that you are a student and they will give it to you.

I created an account said my school and that was pretty much it. I had to verify my email and I have it. I just wasn't sure if I have accidently paid for it or not. When I downloaded it, it says that it is the student version. and on my account managment by Maya it says education so I think I have it now. So I guess thats good.

you do, I just didnt know the actual process as i have never had to get free software from schools for courses.

I have been using autodesk maya on my desktop for the last few days and it works pretty well in my opinion. These are the following specs:

I5 4690k
Gtx 970
8gb ram

How would you compare the lenovo P40 yoga to my desktop. So I can see how the autodesk maya would feel on the P40. Also could u compare it to the P50 like the low spec p50. I dont really know much about the quadro cards.

Well the p50 with the stock i5 it comes with will perform about the same, as your desktop. The only difference is you will have a graphics card designed for doing the work instead of one that is designed for gaming that is now totally obselete.
