Laptop for Collage

I will be starting school as a business major in the fall simester and my parents are going to pay for my laptop as a graduation gift, however they would like it to last the 4 years through collage. I will have my Samsung note 10.1 2014 and my custom built gaming pc at school so I'm not worried about power. I am concerned about portability battery life and for it to last 4 years. Any input is appriciated. I am willing to use windows or mac.

Much as I like Windows machines, my daughter is finishing her third year of college and her Macbook Air is going fine. It's big, it's light, it works.

Macs are great but they are overpriced spec wise in my opinion compared to windows laptops. What is your budget?
