Doesn't really matter now since the auction closed but you can
buy them new from dell for $40-300 more than what it sold for,
depending on accessories. and for the warranties support etc
i'd go that route personally.

Not a route for me. As you purchase a new laptop with a warrantee
and you lose 10 to 20% walking out of the door with it. And I also
have heard many horror stories on the warrantee work anyway. One guy
purchased a new laptop for school and it failed right away and he
never got it back until school was over! That is so sad!

What I rather do personally is to purchase refurbished or used for a
great price. That way the value don't drop right away. And then look
on eBay for spare parts. That way if it does fail, you can get it up
and running again in no time. For example, if my Toshiba 2595XDVD
ever fails, I can swap out the hard drives with my spare in just 30
seconds! No service center can beat that ever!

Cheers!

Note the word 'personally' here just like you used below. They didn't
ask whether I preferred new laptops to used laptops, or warranty work to
fixing them myself, they asked if it was a good deal for the money.
Again, personally, if it comes to buying the same machine for about the
same price from Ebay or from Dell(with a warranty), I'm going to choose
Dell. And then if I don't want to use the warranty it's another story.

Do you often buy new products to turn around and sell them right away?
And how many computers do you now own that are worth what you paid for
them? I don't think computers are something that you can look at as an
investment.

And I also

And I've never heard a single horror story about Ebay, (note sarcasm)

Good thinking But my comparison was a new computer from the manufacturer
vs a supposedly new computer on Ebay for about the same price

That way the value don't drop right away. And then look

And you can rest assured that all those spare parts you get from ebay
will make it to your door in working condition

That way if it does fail, you can get it up

If you know how to work on comuters and happen to have a spare drive
sitting around fully formatted with all software installed. How about if
it has a bad motherboard? Have you priced notebook motherboards lately?
And whatever you swap out you have to add into the cost of the machine.

Selling right away is not the issue. You have to plan ahead.
MY target price for a used laptop is 10% of what I think I could get for
it today. That way, you have some time to use it. Of course, you have
to be willing to hang 5 years behind the state of the art.

I have found the warranties to be very helpful. My first laptop was an
Epson, and I disocvered that the battery was not holding a charge. I
called the 800 number, and they decided it was probably either a
defective battery or a defective charger. So, two days later, I got a
package from UPS. That afternoon, I received a phone call, confirming
that the package arrived, and an hour later, a repairman showed up at
my house and replaced both parts. I never had a problem again with that
computer. And Epson called back to verify that the local repair place
had given good service. I was very impressed.

A few years later, we had a problem with upgrading the Packard Bell
desktop. The company itself was horrible, but my parents bought the
extended warranty through JCPenney. When we called them, they came and
picked it up, then returned it fixed 2 days later. Not bad.

And when I bought my compaq, I was thrilled with the sleep option and
used it all the time, which eventually caused the computer to start
crashing. I was able to get help via email from the company with no
problem. They had it figured out in a hurry, and I never had any more
problems.

I do buy used computers too, but nothing near new price. If I am going
to by something new, or almost new, I will do so from a real store and
not ebay. Same with my camera equipment. Unless the price is way below
store prices, I won't touch it. I'd rather pay a tad more for the
store's service and reputation. I have bought things on ebay that were
misrepresented. A guy that answered my specific question wrong. I asked
3 times to make sure, but he either scammed me or didn't understand the
question. Another camera was damaged, but it took a month to actually
break. On the other hand, I bought a used camera from a local store,
and it acted weird once, but I thought it was my error. I didn't use it
for a few weeks, then it did it again. It would have been an expensive
repair, but the camera shop took it back, full refund, more than 30
days after the purchase.

I'm all for ebay in the right circumstances, but there are risks
involved, and there are times when a store is a much better deal. Or
buying locally. I bought my current laptop from somebody on the local
craigslist. I was able to look at it, see it running, and confirm that
it was as stated. And I know where the guy lives if there is a problem.
I bought my last used laptop from somebody on the local marketplace
newsgroup. I personally would not buy a used computer without being
able to look at it in person and know where the seller lives.
