I'm looking to get my teenage daughter a laptop for Christmas, and need some information on the various discrete graphic options available. The most common seems to be the NVIDIA GeForce, but I'm having a hard understanding the differences between the various series:

GTX 800m
GT 940m
GTX 950m
GTX 960m
GTX 970m
GTX 980m

She wants to get into gaming, especially MMO's and games like Skyrim, but the listed requirements tend to geared towards desktop components. How do these compare to each other, and to the desktop cards? I want to make sure we get what is needed, but if there ends up being a huge cost difference, I'd rather get her a desktop and a cheap laptop rather than a hugely expensive laptop.

Thanks!

970m and 980 good for gaming. 950 and 960m just decent. 940m not so good. Gtx800m is better tha the 940m but still not the greatest.

Also desktop will always be better. A gtx980m compared to a 980 is a big difference. Also if you want a laptop top with a 980m youwill pay a big premium. Advice get a desktop or make one and save 100s

There is no easy way to compare how powerful a mobile GPU is compared to a desktop GPU. But I can tell you for sure that the GTX 980m is less powerful than the desktop GTX 970. The GTX 980m is likely a little more powerful than a desktop GTX 960.

At best the nVidia 940m is probably a bit slower than the desktop GT 740.
