:pt1cable: Hi everyone, i was just wondering which laptop I should get out oft he following and which would be good for moderate gaming please help me compare the graphics and the processor, I just want to let you all know that I don't need the laptop for any CPU intensive programs:

Solution
Honestly, if you want the best of both worlds, then this might be worth looking at: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220639

It has the CPU from the Gateway, the same GTX 260M, 4gb of RAM and a 15.6'' HD screen. It's a little more than the Gateway, but again you are getting both the power and portability that you are looking for.

Also, Best Buy has the G60 with the P8700 for only a little more than the Gateway: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+Laptop+with+Intel%26%23174%3B+Core%26%23153%3B2+Duo+Processor+-+Black/Blue/9568112.p?id=1218125777703&skuId=9568112

As for the graphics cards GTX 260M is the best one in performance , then HD4650 then GT 230M .
The best processor is Core i7 720QM then comes the Core2 Quad Q9000 then Core2 Duo P8700 and at last Core2 Duo P7450.
So i think you should get the HP Pavilion dv7-2270us if you wanted a balance between the CPU and the GPU , if you want it for games get the Gateway FX as it has a better CPU than Asus laptop

I see, right now I am deciding between the gateway and the HP corei7, I dont know what to do. I am a moderate gamer, I play the latest games, but I have a desktop for gaming I just want this as a portable solution and so I can take this to LAN partys.

In gaming, the Gateway will win. Hands down. Very rarely will a stronger CPU give you better performance in games when compared to the GPU. Not to mention that the i7 mobile CPUs eat batteries for breakfast, so I wouldn't expect to stay unplugged for very long.

Basically the way I am looking at is with the Gateway you are getting a fast dual core, a more powerful GPU, potentially longer battery life and all the while saving a few $$ (ok it's only $50, but still).

Hope im not hijacking the thread but when checking out the 2 notebooks in question, I noticed that the gateway hd is 5400rpm v 7200rpm on the hp. How does the different hd speeds affect gaming and other use?

On the bestbuy website it says the asus has a five star processor but the gate way is four. YOu say the Asus is faster so what is the deal? I really dont know

Ignore all of that "star" stuff. The Gateway has the faster processor. Since you are comparing two CPUs that are of the same family, you can use the clock speed as the deciding facter 2.53ghz (Gateway) is going to be faster than 2.13ghz (Asus). Since all else is the same, the Gateway is the better system.

Also, Dia-j never said the Asus was better.

yea does the the 5400rpm vs 7200rpm make much of a difference, if it does I can always replace the hard drive down the road....and yea the core i7 will eat battery.....thats a good point. GOSH its so hard to decide i need it for UNI and GAMING lol. Im just afraid that the CPU on the gateway will become outdated in a few years because computers might switch to core i5 and i7 in the upcoming years....

the gateway doesnt have an LED backlit screen or keyboard does it? the ASUS does and its cheaper, the diff between DDr2 and DDr3 isnt much and the CPUs are that different, well atleast when you use the laptop u wont be able to tell the difference.

The 7200rpm HDD will be faster, noticeably in games where you are constantly loading maps and such. The additional heat/ battery drain probably isn't all that noticeable.

As far as the CPU is concerned, I've been running a 2.00ghz Core2Duo in my laptop for 2 years now and haven't really found anything that I can't run game wise. I play COD2 and 4 and I even installed Crysis. Both of the COD games ran fine. Crysis was playable, but my dated GPU is what is holding my laptop back. As far as getting out dated, most games are only now taking advantage of multiple cores so I think you have a little while yet before you have to worry about a Dual Core being obsolete.

I don't believe the Gateway has either an LED lit screen or a backlit keyboard. Not sure how important either of those are to you. And no, there isn't much of a noticeable difference between DDR2 and DDR3. Most people wouldn't even be able to tell.

Thanks for the clarification.

ANd sorry for the muisunderstanding

^Not sure why you can't edit your post.

Anyway, it's going to depend on what you are doing/what programs you are running. If the programs you are running can actually utilize the Quad Core, then the Asus would be better. However, most games either only utilize one CPU core or are just now starting to take advantage of multiple cores. I'd still say it is more advantageous to have the faster dual core instead of a slower clocked Quad. Plus the Dual Core will save you some battery life as the Quads are a little power hungry.

Thanks for all of the help guys.

And yes, I was wondering

between the ASUS and the Gateway (links are in my first post)
Do you guys think its worth the 50$, notice that I need my laptop to be as portable as possible cuz I also need it for UNI. The gateway does not have a LED screen or backlit keyboard and is apparently a fingerprint magnet. The ASUS has DDr2 memory, but that doesn't really matter becasue I won't be able to notice much of a difference, but my freind was saying that DDR2 will be expensive like how DDR memory is now is If i ever want to upgrade. I told him that I probably don't need more than 4GB RAM anyways. ALso the Gateway has a p8700 vs ASUS which has P7450, but the only diff is the clock speed but they are both 3mb l2 cache, so again not much difference is noted here. THe asus on the other hand is more portable, lighter thinner, LED screen and backlit keyboard. What would you guys get if you were in my situation?
