Solution

Gotcha, that's good then. Okay, good luck on the format + reload! Glad I could help wherever I could.

The desktop icons moving after a reboot was just an example, other savings such as power settings and MBR settings seem to revert back to default after a restart

Well after i did bootrec /RebuildBcd, /fixMbr and /fixboot in the Advanced Restart my laptop was shutting down properly, restarting properly and sleeping properly but after a couple of restarts the problems can straight back again.
Whilst I was doing this i moved an icon on the desktop by accident, which reverted to its original position after the primary problem came back, leading me to the suspicion that settings werent being saved properly.

I also noticed last night that in the system environment variables, it says the OS is Windows_NT and the CPU Architecture is AMD64, which doesnt make much sense as its a i7 4500u. But im not sure if this means anything

Thanks for the reply :)

Windows NT makes sense (it has been that way since Windows 2000, I think), but I'm not sure about the AMD64 mention.

Have you tried the command line: sfc /scannow

That will scan your Windows file system integrity, and make repairs where necessary. I'm not sure of what's causing your issue, though. In the worst case, you could reinstall Windows (it may work and save you a lot of time in troubleshooting, but won't tell you what went wrong in the first place).

Just ran sfc /scannow and no integrity violations were found.
I have re-installed windows 10 several times sofar although the current installation has been the first one.
Im reluctant to go back to windows 7, especially as the laptop came with 8.1
Im starting to think it may be a hardware issue, i cant think why though, the only thing i changed was hdd --> ssd and i ran the samsung magician tool to optimise the system for an ssd...
Not sure what to do

It's possible that Windows 10, specifically, may be part of the problem. Some systems require a firmware update to properly run Win 10. If your laptop has a BIOS update available for it, that would be something to consider trying (flashing the BIOS is risky, but might resolve your issue).

Did you have this issue - or any similar ones - when you were running Windows 8.1?

Yeah its possible, I wasn't having any problems with windows 8.1, but then I wasn't having any problems with windows 10 ONLY when the laptop was using a HDD. When i switched to an SSD i encountered the problems.
I talked to HP a little while ago asking if there was an updated BIOS for this laptop that wasn't visible to the public on the website. There was, i flashed it and the problem was solved for one or two restarts then the problems returned.
On the weekend I might try installing windows 7 and see if i get the issue again, otherwise, any other suggestions for what i could do?
Many thanks

Edit: The current BIOS version is Insyde F.68, release date 21/9/2015. previously had a 2013 one

The only other suggestion I have is to look into a firmware update for that SSD you installed. Most SSDs don't need one, but once in awhile there's a version that poses an issue or two.

Beyond that, trying Win 7 or 8.1 can help you isolate the problem; no issues on either of those would tell you that there's something about Win 10 that your hardware is not apt to cooperate with.

According to samsung magician, the SSD has the latest firmware: http://imgur.com/a7MHnyH
This weekend ill try rolling back to windows 8.1 or 7 and ill report back.
Thanks for your help!

Thanks alot man, the windows 8.1 clean install seemed to fix all my problems!
I can't imagine why this would have worked though, literally the only thing i changed was the SSD
Ohwell, atleast everything works on it!

Thanks alot!!
