Laptop not shutting down

I cant shut down my laptop (acer). I click at the shut down button in the start but nothing happens. Help

It may just be a temporary "glitch"

Press the power button and keep it pressed until the laptop turns off.
Now turn it on again and let the drive error checker run to check for inconsistencies in the file system
caused by the improper shutdown.

If Windows comes up without the error checker having run, initiate it manually.
