LapTop Shut Down

Hello,

I am working an clients Laptop. Its powers down during boot up. I am thinking it is overheating. When I boot with Backtrack 5 it runs pretty good. Does windows heat a system up more? WHat can I try on this.

What OS?

Have you tried a repair CD?

If it's windows XP:

First off read this carefully and all of it first...

Boot with CD.

Once it loads, Press F8 (do not press F6 during load....thats just for RAID stuff).

It will ask you if you want to install XP ....i think it's press enter.

Now it should show the drive volume, this is where you have to be careful not to do a full re-install, it should ask you to "Press R to repair the OS".

Let it run - and usually this fixes many problems.

if its running linux ok then its not likely to be a heat problem--and as its powering off during bootup on windows it hasnt really had a chance to heat up anyway

hope you saved all their important data while you were running backtrack

do you have an xp disc?

It's probably overheating, most chances are that the cooler (ventilator) is broken.

if its overheating why can he run linux on it without it shutting down?

I forgot to say it might be the Windows error. But don't forget that linux doesn't use much of the processor because it barely works.
