A friends Acer aspire s5 laptop fell hard on the floor. Worked normally after that until battery was flat. Then unable to charge or run. It was left for a year and now when I looked at it I found a broken charger plug socket. After fixing this it charges, but the battery remains flat. When trying to start it shuts down in seconds. When I removed the hdd (ssd) the computer starts and runs indefinitely, but is not responding and bios cannot be opened. When I return the hdd the computer again shuts down in seconds. Removing the battery makes no difference.
1) what is the reason for the failure to start? Motherboard?
2) can anything be done for the battery. A new one is quite expensive.
Most grateful for any suggestions.

Thank you for a professional answer that answered my question. I'm afraid that you are right and that the laptop now is a write off.
