ok so my laptop has a broken screen and i want to hook it up to my external monitor with a VGA cable so it well go to the windows XP loading screen with the lines moving across the screen then its stops and doesnt show anything in the monitor

CRT or LCD monitor? Is the laptop output set to a resolution that the external monitor can handle?
