When I plug in the charger to my HP laptop, I get a notification that reads "The Smart AC Adapter is not functioning correctly". I have tested another adapter and have gotten the same result. I took the battery out to try to run it directly from the AC adapter and the power button lights up for ~5 seconds before going dark. Once again I tried different adapters and outlets to no avail. I've had this laptop for less than a month. Could it really be a motherboard issue already?

It sounds like it. Its. not uncommon. But if its under a month. Id be quick to return it as you should get a replacement. If it goes over a month you could be looking at it being repaired under warranty..

Id try removing the power supply and battery then holding down the power button for 15 seconds to see it it helps.

Good luck!
