LCD tv to Windows 8 laptop connection via HDMI

I have an old (2010) Sony Bravia 32" LCD tv with 1 HDMI input.
I have a NEW Acer notebook running Windows8 with HDMI output.

When I try ti connect the notebook to the TV using an HDMI cable I can't get a signal on the TV screen? I get a 'Signal not Recognised' message on the TV screen.

What do I need to do?
