Which one is better for the price? Is the 0.7 lb weight different noticeable?

Lenovo Y50 for $1299 CAD
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB
Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz)
16GB Memory 1TB HDD (5400 RPM) 8GB SSD
5.29 lbs.

ASUS G551JM-DH71-CA for $1199 CAD
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB
Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz)
8GB Memory 750GB HDD (7200 RPM)
6 lbs

Also, is the ASUS G551 memory easily expandable? What would the approximate cost to upgrade to a 16 GB?

It will cost around $70 to get another 8gb of RAM (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231704).

Based purely on specs the Asus is better. It has a better CPU and that makes up for it having 250gb less of storage. The backlighting on the Y50 is better and the keyboard is better. The Asus has a 5hr battery life while the Y50 has a 4hr battery life. As you mentioned the Y50 is lighter.

You will notice the 0.7lbs if you're carrying it around in a backpack all day or have it sitting on your lap for awhile. But if you're going to be using on a desk mostly and only carrying it for a little bit of time, then no you won't notice it.

So in the end if you want a laptop for school or for traveling a little bit more get the Y50. If this is a desktop replacement get the Asus.
