I seldom watch Dateline NBC. But I flipped channels tonight and I
stopped on NBC when I saw the Dateline show presenting a letterboxed
picture in a 4:3 screen. My widescreen TV then add the side bars to
make block borders on all sides.
Before I had my HDTV, I always thought the reason they put letterbox
in this kind of show was because the show was taped in HD format. Now
with my HDTV, I just discovered that all those were just lies. Why
does a big network like NBC would fake a HD show instead of making a
real one or just use the original 4:3 picture? What good is such a
lie? They cheated about 20% out of the 4:3 screen real estate when
they unnecessarily put the letter box there for non-HD viewers. And
the double framing on the 16:9 screen resulted only in 80%x80% or 64%
of the screen.
It didn't bother me much before I knew the truth. Now, I am pissed
when they cheated 20% and 36% of the precious screen area.
