Solved! Lg soundbar not connecting properly with my Hitachi roku tv

I just bought a LG soundbar because the speakers on my Hitachi roku tv sucked. I connected the soundbar to the tv using the optical cord. Once I got everything connected using my tv remote only turns down the sound on the soundbar but only when I hit the volume up button. I've tried several different settings on the tv but still cant figure it out.
