looking for a new tv for my parents. They do not have or want cable or satellite. they just want their basic channels

They just want basic channels like abc, nbc, pbs, cbs, etc. If we buy them a new tv what will they need to just keep their basic tv channels? Is it still possible?
Right now their tv is like 15yrs old with a converter box. I called 2 Best Buys and they said no new hdtvs work on basic tv alone and that you NEED cable or satellite. I find this very hard to believe. Can someone help? Thanks in advance.

here is one right on the best buy website which supports digital local channels. new tvs have a digital tuner so they do not need a digital conversion box.

you do not NEED anything hooked up to the television.

i dont have cable, satelite, or even an antenna hooked up to my tv and it works fine. i mainly play my movie collection, games and surf the web on my pc which gets me youtube and some other sites. there is no need to have the tv hooked in to any services.

it sounds like the best buys in your area are just trying to net you into some kind of cable deal.
