My screen on my TOSHIBA laptop has broken, and I thought I could hook it up to my TV through a HDMI cable, but I currently doesn't work.

I had my laptop on, then I connected the hdmi to both ports on the laptop and on TV and changed my input/source on my TV & nothing pops up.

I'm not sure if this doesn't exactly work or if I'm doing it wrong.

It might just be not switching. I don't think I've seen a laptop with only an hdmi in when most don't have any in at all. Windows+p to cycle through extended, duplicate and single display. What if it's not the screen that broke?

Do you have the laptop name or a link to it ? You laptop probably doesn't support hdmi out if this isn't working or the cable is faulty. If the cable is good then your laptop doesn't support hdmi out only in. Hope this helps

Good point and you are right usually you cant use the screen as a monitor independent of the laptop I had my stuff mixed up. And that's true if the screen is broken or the whole pc you might be out of luck as it will be tough to access any settings you might need to adjust without a screen good luck
