My uncle wants to replace his desktop with a Windows 10 laptop.

Preferably one with both SSD and HDD since he needs the space but with faster boot-up time. Maybe a hybrid drive?

Any recommendations?

Maybe something like this Lenovo?

Thicker is fine. It's not going to be moved much.

I don't think crazy processing power is going to be necessary. He's not going to be gaming or editing photos/video. Just browsing, multimedia, etc...

That looks promising. Are Acers pretty reliable?

Perhaps a 17" HP Pavilion 17t laptop will do. It has a starting price of $460 and you can configure it to your uncle's liking. It comes with a Core i3-5020u, but can be upgraded to a dual core Core i7-6500u for $190. A nVidia 940m could be added if he wants to play some "light" games in addition to the i7-6500u for $60, but otherwise it is not necessary. The 1600x900 resolution screen can be upgraded to 1080p for $110.

The 1TB hard drive can be upgraded to a 256GB SSD for $180. But you can simply buy your own 500GB SSD for $165 and install it yourself. It's kinda like getting a free 1TB HDD that you can use as an external hard drive.

Do not bother upgrading the RAM to 8GB for $80, you can buy a 4GB stick of RAM for $22 and install it yourself.

If your uncle wants a 15.6" laptop then perhaps the following HP Pavilion 15t laptop will do with a starting price of $640.

http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/Laptops/hp-pavilion-15t-laptop-m7h64av-1

It comes with a Core i5-6200u which can up upgraded to the Core i7-6500u for $120. The nVidia 940m can be added for another $50. The 1600x900 resolution screen can be upgraded to 1080p for just $20. It comes with 6GB of RAM, but if you want to upgrade to 8GB then simply buy the 4GB stick I linked above for $22. There is no option for a SSD, but you can simply purchase the 500GB SSD I linked above as well.

Thanks, I'll check those out. I would prefer one with both an SSD and HDD installed already like the Acer TechyInAZ posted above though.

Don't be so sure about the RAM. I bought my daughter an HP for college and the only way to get to the second memory bank is to disassemble the laptop. Unless you feel like doing that you may want to pay for the extra RAM. I build PC's and decided to pay for it rather than take apart the laptop which would probably void the warranty not to mention what a pain it is.
