I have been watching this model (Acer One AO756-2617 )on Amazon for a bit. It usually is around $289. However after looking at Acer's page, they seem to have about 20 or so models available. http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/models/netbooks

there is probably only a $100 difference between all the models...

AO756-2617 - Intel Celeron Processor 877 (1.4GHz, 2MB L3 cache)
AO756-2626 - Intel Celeron Processor 847 (1.1GHz, 2MB L3 Cache)
AO756-4411 - Intel® Pentium® 987 processor (1.5GHz)

I would almost suggest getting the Acer Chromebook and then putting Linux Ubuntu on it. Probably the best value for the money if all you are doing is web browsing and word processing.

Otherwise, get one that has at least a Celeron and 2 GB of ram. The Intel Atom and AMD C series are slugs.

I was really seriously looking at the Chromebooks, however I also want to have this available as a 2nd laptop for my kids to use (when I'm not using it) as they like to play Java games, which Chrome cannot do.

I was really hoping for Win8, but for $289 with 4GB Ram (can handle up to 8gb) and Intel Celeron Processor 877 (1.4GHz, 2MB L3 cache) this seems like it's well worth $40 over a Chromebook.

Yeah I agree. Go with that one. The 1.4 GHz celeron will be fine for basic tasks in Windows 8. I was under the impression the celeron models were the ones in the mid $300 range.

Everything I need it for, I can do in Google Chrome. However Windows comes into play for other users, so I will not just get a Chromebook. I just wish it shipped with win8.

I would avoid Acer, their build quality is honestly horrible speaking from experience with several models unfortunately.
