Hello all,

I have a laptop that I used to use before I built my custom gaming desktop. I was thinking about trying to sell it on ebay or something to try and buy another laptop.

The only use for a laptop for me, really, is when i go over to game at one of my friends' houses. So the laptop would only need to be able to run games on low-medium settings, but with a decent framerate.

So, i figured one of my options could be buying an older gaming laptop, as it would be cheap but still able to run games.

The laptop i currently have is listed here:

http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/lenovo-lenovo-ideapad-15-6-laptop-grey-intel-core-i5-3210m-750gb-hdd-6gb-ram-english-refurbished-p580/10232141.aspx

I know it is listed for $200, but since mine is in a like new condition and has upgraded ram (8gb) i think i could sell it for about $300-$400.

I was looking into gaming laptops in that budget (yeah i know that a $300 budget is a joke but) on ebay i found some old alienware models selling in that range:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Alienware-m15x-15-6-1-73Ghz-4gb-RAM-and-Intel-Core-i7-/301409464836
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Alienware-M11x-11-6-Notebook-Customized-/281506875706

On top of the $300-$400 dollars i expect out of the laptop, i have about $100 in available spending, making anything less than $500 a possible buy.

So what do you guys think about this idea? I mean, I know buying an old laptop seems silly, but I just need something to run games on while not at home. Having a new project would be fun, also ;)

That's kind of a myth that adding in additional hardware will offset depreciation. It will somewhat but not by double the face value of the item you're trying to sell.

Ok, good to know, but that is beside the matter at hand. The real question is the second part.

I'd be a bit leery of buying a used laptop off eBay without contacting the seller first. You never know if something may have been damaged or the original manufacturer warranty being violated in any way.

Do you think any of the listed laptops would suite my needs?

Depends on what you're going to use it for. For general media and browsing it's fine. For games don't expect any of them to run anything high end like Crysis 3, Civilization: Beyond Earth, or Wolfenstein: The New Order.

I mean, I will stick mostly to games like Terraria and CoD: World at War, not to mention that the alienware laptops look much cooler than my lenovo laptop lol

Ok, one last question, is there anything I should consider before listing my laptop on ebay? Maybe something to increase its value?
