What year and model is your MacBook?
Do you get the ? symbol when you try to boot? If you do, 9 times out of 10 I have found it is not the hard drive but the cable from the hard drive to the Logic Board. Easy and cheap to replace, but that depends on which model you have.
You can test this by removing the hard drive and putting it into a USB enclosure, then plugging it into one of the MacBook's USB ports. Boot the MacBook and then hold the Option key just after you hear the chime and it should boot to a device selection screen. If you see Macintosh HD or something similar below an orange icon, click on it. If it boots normally (it will be slower) then you can be pretty sure it is the cable and not the hard drive.
