I think you meant Spartan and they would most likely only use a PC to smash an emeny and would not care what OS is on it.

Speaking about Mac, I saw an ad for a refurbished mac pro desktop that just give me the giggles.

"Apple Store Outlet has a selection of Mac Pro Factory Refurbished Desktops with same 1 year warranty as new:

Mac Pro Quad Desktop with Two Quad-Core 2.8GHz Intel Xeon Processors, 2GB/320GB, 16X Superdrive, ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB Video Card (two dual-link DVI) $2399 Free Shipping"

8 core system w/ 2 GB ram and a $30 vga card for $2400. Can't help but to imagine the dumb sap that buys that for their desk top pc. I guess a system like is good for some sort of server work!!

[citation][nom]Tomsguiderachel[/nom]So, in some ways, it might be "too late" for all those graphics/artsy/media types to ever learn windows. They have no choice but to continue to use Macs, because who has time to learn a new OS? This is an interesting point, but it doesn't really explain the growth in marketshare that apple has seen in the last couple of years.[/citation]

I think the analogy is spot on actually.

Mac tries VERY hard to penetrate schools as much as possible. The result is that many people get used to the OS...and as any IT person knows (or someone who has general wisdom) people typically loathe "relearning" how to do something. Considering that most editors/graphic artists and so on often grudgingly stick to the softwaret hey learned on this isn't at all suprising that they would also stick to the OS. Especially since with a mac it removes the burdon of choice to a large degree. With a PC, having access to all the hardware in the world can be overwhelming for a lot of people and they always end up feeling like they made a dumb choice or could have done better. Editors and artists are not neccesarily computer savy.

So a combination of getting people trained on using macs at schools combined with heavy marketing and the "tradition" that people who do this use macs is a pretty strong combined force. To me when there is an upswing in macs in the market it I usually think its a trickle down effect of getting more placed in schools or a good marketing surge effect.

That said...did apple recently loose market share in the laptop/desktop segments?

[citation][nom]Tomsguiderachel[/nom]I feel that about 10% of the articles are about Apple computers--which just about reflects the market share of Apple computers. [/citation]

One slight problem. If 10% of the articles are abotu macs...and 10% of the articles are about PCs, and 80% are about other gagetry and companies, the market etc. in general then the actual ratio of PC to mac articles is about 50/50. Which feels closer to what I've seen posted? To be fair I haven't taken a running tally. /shrug

I want to comment on those who pointed out that photographer tends to use Mac. One reason, probably the main reason, they use Mac because it is a kind of tradition from old days. In the old days, Mac did have advantage on photo and video editing over PC and therefore Mac had become de facto standard for photography and video editing. Thing has changed a lot since, PC has caught up a lot and now PC is at least as capable as Mac.

For God's sakes DO NOT BUY THE DELL LAPTOP! It's a nightmare. That notebook gets REALLY F'ng HOT you can LITERALLY fry an egg on it. THE WEBCAM IS USELESS! The keyboard is flimsy. ONLY 2 USB PORTS! DO NOT BUY PLEASE!

I'm D O N E with Dell, for the first time, I'm actually tempted to buy the new MacBook Pro, install Ubuntu on it or if Windows7 is actually any good, AND BE OVER WITH IT ALL!!!

There are some special functions that certain laptops do so choose the one that works according to your need.

just by the Mac OS and install it on a PC if folks like it so much. Fair choice vs spending over 2k for an already outdated laptop.

OSX wont install onto just any PC. There are only a few chipsets that are currently supported, and just as few video cards and wireless cards and etc. Basically, installing OSX onto a PC system is quite a laborous task. You could buy a laptop that is mostly compatible with OSX for decently cheaper than a Mac, but then you'll end up spending an extra lump of cash on a compatible wifi card as well as void your warrenty putting it in.

After analyzing the currently available alternatives for a Macbook Pro, this is my list of what I feel as the best contenders for replacing macbook pro - http://deepakjulien.com/top-macbook-pro-substitutes.html. They are the best value for money and great windows machines that can repalce a macbook in performance.
