[citation][nom]Tomsguiderachel[/nom]So, in some ways, it might be "too late" for all those graphics/artsy/media types to ever learn windows. They have no choice but to continue to use Macs, because who has time to learn a new OS? This is an interesting point, but it doesn't really explain the growth in marketshare that apple has seen in the last couple of years.[/citation]
I think the analogy is spot on actually.
Mac tries VERY hard to penetrate schools as much as possible. The result is that many people get used to the OS...and as any IT person knows (or someone who has general wisdom) people typically loathe "relearning" how to do something. Considering that most editors/graphic artists and so on often grudgingly stick to the softwaret hey learned on this isn't at all suprising that they would also stick to the OS. Especially since with a mac it removes the burdon of choice to a large degree. With a PC, having access to all the hardware in the world can be overwhelming for a lot of people and they always end up feeling like they made a dumb choice or could have done better. Editors and artists are not neccesarily computer savy.
So a combination of getting people trained on using macs at schools combined with heavy marketing and the "tradition" that people who do this use macs is a pretty strong combined force. To me when there is an upswing in macs in the market it I usually think its a trickle down effect of getting more placed in schools or a good marketing surge effect.
That said...did apple recently loose market share in the laptop/desktop segments?
