I would sue the crap out of them. #1 they broke down my door #2 they pointed a bunch of guns at me and my wife. #3 no warrant? #4 no proof! #5 Everything they did was way over the top WAY WAY over the top. they should have gotten an arrest warrant after verifying the guy actually did download this crap and then came to the door and do the simple your under arrest cuff the guy and goto jail.

[citation][nom]house70[/nom]Besides, he's a good person... he's not filing a lawsuit, like vast majority of idiots out there would do. He just wants some lessons to be learned from this - albeit I have a feeling that the only person learning a lesson is him. Govt. is not good at learning.[/citation]

They might if he was smart enough to sue them for enough to perhaps change some policy. And even if they didn't they really deserve it.

WEP can be broken with 250mb of captured traffic. WPA and WPA2 can be cracked in about 20 minutes for $34 using a cloud service that was in articles over a year ago, using some custom rainbow tables and a bunch of processors to run through them.

I hope you're not relying on WPA2-PSK...

If its in a password dictonary...

Otherwise if its long and random forget it (e.g. assuming random mixed case + 10 digits + 10 puntuation : 21 chars ~ 128bit security, 42 chars ~ 256 bit security and even 128bit is good for at least another 20 years).

On the other hand, I wouldn't bother with SSID hiding or MAC filtering though since most war driving tools will give you the required information to bypass these without even asking.

Sorry, but I forgot to mention that the above only goes for WPA2. WEP is totally broken and not worth using and WPA can suffer from packet injection (as can WPA2 if you use TKIP instead of the default AES-CCM) but this is not really an issue for home users though.

[citation][nom]ct1615[/nom]if i was the guy, i would sue the ICE's ass off. what the hell happened to "innocent until proven guilty"?[/citation]
It's not easy to sue law enforcement for things like this. Even people who are exonerated after being in prison for years have a tough time getting any substantial compensation. The only chance if is if it can be proven that law enforcement or the prosecution did something blatantly illegal.

Other viable cases against law enforcement involve things like excessive force and racial profiling. If you don't fit one of those categories, you'll probably have trouble finding any lawyer who will take the case.

I personally think that people should be able to leave their wifi open. If it wasn't for legal implications like this one, I'd love to leave my router open. I'd just setup a firewall between my internal systems and the router and then allow outside users to use up to 10% of my total bandwidth. If more people would do things like that the world would be a better place.

[citation][nom]ct1615[/nom]if i was the guy, i would sue the ICE's ass off. what the hell happened to "innocent until proven guilty"? Having a bunch of guys break into your house in the early morning while you and your family are half asleep is OK? Are "potential" pedophiles really considered armed and dangerous criminals?[/citation]
You are innocent until proven guilty, but that doesn't mean that the police can't harass you with unwarranted claims. They just can't charge you with anything. I personally had the police accuse me of a crime I had nothing to do with. It was the worst experience of my life and there was pretty much nothing I can do about it.

[citation][nom]mman74[/nom]At otacon 72, would he have deserved it if he had a WEP password, which could be broken by most novices in minutes?Would he have deserved it even if he used WPA or WPA2 but used a simple password? At some point if someone wants to hack your connection any resourceful hacker can. However I agree with you at some point people have got to take responsibility and put on meaningful security to their WIFI networks.[/citation]

Well, he didn't post his address, or write this post on his neighbour's (FB) wall.

Yep, it used to be bad enough with the regular police busting people's doors down looking for an ounce of pot, shooting their dogs in front of the children, hiding or manipulating evidence.

Now we have TSA, ICE, warrant-less break ins, warrant-less wiretaps, etc.

Remember when ICE wrongfully seized thousands of websites on suspicion of child porn? Sure does your credibility a lot of good if all your customers see THAT when trying to log into your site.

Doesn't matter if it was wrong, doesn't matter one bit, the stigma of that will follow this guy for a long time. ICE should be censured and get penalized for this travesty of justice.

1- WAP and WEP keys can be cracked easily for people who really want to, or find need for such purposes

2- It is these @$$holes that mess up everything for every one!
Where was the time that the neighbor forgot to secure his wifi, and you could grab his signal to check your mails without worrying about paying your own internet connection?

Internet is too expensive for many, and many only use it for blogging, facebooking, googling, and perhaps youtubing. They don't feel it's worth the extra $50 per month, when 3 or 4 of these people could easily be on one internet connection, and the internet connection still not loading more than 10- 20GB per month!

Leechers and pedophiles are destroying this for everyone!!!
