max. ram of Asus X555UB

Hello,
I'm interested in this notebook . Highest model comes with i7 processor and 12gb RAM(on some sites there's 4+8). I found this in specifications:

Memory: DDR3L 1600 MHz SDRAM, 1 x DIMM socket for expansion up to 12 GB SDRAM

What does it mean? What maximum size of ram can it handle? Intel specs says that processor can handle up to 32gb ram.

I'm kinda confused about that. Thanks for explanation.

cpu can support, doesn't mean the notebook can. need to go with the notebook spec

why do you think there is 2 slot? it said 1 socket. sound to me one is solder to the system board. but like the spec said, max you can get is total of 12 GB

Well there's: DDR3L 1600 MHz SDRAM - I expect it's on board memory !comma! 1 x DIMM socket for expansion up to 12 GB SDRAM - the second one

The laptop has 4GB of RAM that is soldered into the motherboard so it cannot be upgraded or removed. The single DIMM slot means you can add a 8GB stick of RAM for a total of 12GB. 8GB sticks are fairly inexpensive.

Technically, you can have 20GB of RAM in that laptop. But that means you have to by a 16GB stick of RAM from Intelligent Memory. It uses proprietary to fit 16GB ram modules on a single RAM stick. That means they are very expensive; Intelligent Memory 16GB RAM sticks are only sold by Memphis Electronics and it cost $189 from Amazon. These RAM sticks are only compatible with laptops that have 5th generation CPUs (Broadwell) or 6th generation CPUs (Skylake) made by Intel.

thanks, now I'm not sure if it worth of that money (750€). Should I rather buy something else? Because I might need more RAM in a few years.

I suppose it depends on what you plan on doing. For the average person / gamer a total of 8GB is more than enough, but since 8GB RAM sticks should be fairly inexpensive it doesn't hurt to have a total of 12GB of RAM.

In a few years it could be possible that whatever laptop you buy now will not be fast enough for you. It all depends on what you plan to use it for and how high your expectations are.

Well, you are right. It's probably better to buy now this one and in 4,5 years something newer. I'm not going to play any games there, just for a development. Currently I've got just 4gb ram and it's a bit slowly but I guess 12 should be enough for some time. Thanks.
