Supposedly the limit of extra ram I can put into it is 4gb ddr3 1600mhz. It already had 8gb ram, I bought a 4gb ddr3 1600mhz ram, opened the back and saw one of those already sitting in there, it was put in by the manufacturer. So I may or may not have wasted my money on it, however I want to know if there is any chance to increase the ram at all.

Or is there any change I can allocate gpu ram for regular use? I don't need 2gb gpu ram.

But if it doesn't work I'll end up with about $100 of now worthless 4+8 gb external ram. Is there a kind of place which would just let me try it?

Also how likely/unlikely is it that this will work? Why would a laptop have such a constraint in the first place?

Its purely a motherboard resttriction. Different laptop motherboard support different amounts of RAM. So have you actualy bought the RAM yet? Or are you thinking about buying it?

I was told that I could add 4gb, so I bought it. But when I opened the back of the laptop, I found the extra slot already filled with another 4gb.

So then you have already bought the RAM. If it lets u have 8 gigs RAM in your laptop thats good. But if it doesnt work, then just return it. What would you do with it anyway if you have already bought it?

If it already fill, nothing you can do, you could buy another laptop without the extra RAM then you won't waste the $100 RAM.
