McAfee Detected a virus - but no file is infected?

Well, quite recently, the McAfee Virus Detection thing pops up for me (the one with the virus in between some fingers of a hand window) and tells me I have a virus in the boot sector or some such and I cannot delete it or clean it. It has no file name either.

I have done a full scan of both my hard drives - of ALL Files, Compressed and a Full Heuristics scan and everything. It did detect the JS.seeker virus, and was able to delete it (some non-essential internet temporary file - the way they seem to be getting on the PC's these days).

But after that, my PC had been virus-free for a month up until this week - and previous to that, virus free since I installed the OS and everything.

My father is a network engineer and said if the full entire virus scan with updated DAT files and a recent Super-Dat did not detect it, then there should be no virus - unless its something new McAfee hasn't found yet.

Another odd thing I experienced was when I tried saving a file from the internet a couple times, when the "save as" window came up, where I could browse for a place, it said I had that boot sector virus with no name. It also did it for my Floppy drive and also a non-writable CD in my CD-ROM drive.

So my question being, since I have scoured the McAfee site for any lead on this, if anybody else has heard of such a thing?

Many thanks for any help.

so will this work in windows 2000? Just curious, forgot to add thats my OS. This is the biggest newbie question though, but I've never done it before. How do I create a startup disk in Win2k? I feel so ashamed I don't know how to do that. :\

Don't feel bad, its all about learning new things. Nobody here has all the answers, but the knowledge gained here is a collective shared experience. Having tough problems help you expand your knowledge so you will be able to return the favor to another someday.

Well, for starters you will need to format a floppy disk with NTFS (if you are using NTFS). Best to not make it from your infected PC. Here is a link <A HREF="http://www.labmice.net/troubleshooting/boot_problems.htm" target="_new">Lab Mice</A> that has a lot of good information. Here a place where you can d/l a <A HREF="http://www.bootdisk.com/" target="_new">Boot Disk</A>. I hope this helps.

According to <A HREF="http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/auto/index/indexJ.html" target="_new">Symantec</A> the JS Seeker virus is a Trojan Horse.

Just a thought - were you using the Internet at the time. I occassionally get this message when logging on to online chat rooms, although it only happens quite rarely. In my case it is not a virus but is flagged because of virus-like characteristics. When I do a full scan it reports that my system is clean. Might not be your problem but just thought I'd mention it.

Unless, of course, it came free with your pre-built system. Then it rocks.

99.9999999997% of the time, it's not free; they just figure $15 for the license...

My dad got the message now on a totally different PC - a laptop to be exact. He was doing a brand new installation of windows 2000, and right after installing SP2 for Office 2000, he started getting the message.

No viruses for him either.

Eh well.

helps a little - now only if I knew WHAT file was "infected" - so I could get Microsoft to offer a downloadable clean version. :\

Try emailing MS and asking them about this occurance. Would be interesting to hear what they say, or how they respond.
