Meaning of 3G or 4G support in phones?

Hi, What does it really mean by smartphone has 3G support or 4G support? What makes the difference in terms of compatible to 3G or 4G in smartphones? Is there any specific hardware system is used in mobile by which we can say it supports 4G or its supports only 3G?
