memory card error

I have Canon camera digital IXY 400 pc 1038. The memory card error. I went to buy new one and they are saying this camera uses cards low speed. In the store they try to reformate it as it is in the camera. Steel says error.
I do not know how to reformat it if I put the card in the laptop. Is there a guide? Is it a problem of the card ? Is it a problem of the camera? Where or how to fix it if it is?

Try formatting the card in the camera. It's in the menu settings. If that doesn't work try a different card.
