Microdrives...some people love them, some people hate them.
Still the price for a 4GB microdrive is right so my plan is to buy
one, stick it in my 10D, and leave it there (download via cable, yes I
know it's slow).

I would be interested in comments before I make the final decision.

thanks

I don't have the 10D (I've got the D70), but do use three 4GB MDs and
think they are a great solution. You'll REALLY want to rethink that
"download
via cable" philosophy...I got a generic CF1/2 PCMCIA reader from B&H
for about $20 and it was really worth the money. BTW--Before you buy a MD,
check on www.techbargains.com for deals as there've been $50 rebates on them
and they have been in the $125-150 range.

I have a 4gb drive in my Minolta 7D and very pleased with it - essential,
IMHO, if you do a lot of RAW shooting due to size.

I'd also recommend using a CF card reader. Be aware that not all CF readers
support the MD. Hitachi's site lists those that do. E.g. the Sandisk
readers ($20) you see at Circuitcity and Best Buy work fine.

I have used an IBM 1Mb microdrive for more than 2 years. More than 14,000
images from my Fuji S2 pro camera.
I always remove the card and transfer images to computer via a card reader,
sometimes several times a day !

The card has never given me any trouble.

I hope you mean 1 Gb.

Yes, Rudy

Well spotted....I should have said 1GB. Those 14,0000 pictures must have
worn out my own personal hard drive :))

IMHO :

Advantage : price.

Disadvantages :

- they eat a lot of battery
- they don't work at high altitude (according to the manual & personal
experience in the Swiss Alps)
- they don't work properly when the temperature is too hot (personal
experience in Sri-Lanka)
- they are rather slow.
- multi Gb cards is a bit like putting all one's eggs in the same basket...
it's a bit risky in case of failure.

Greetings.

Pierre.
