microphone recognised as headset

I have an Asus X-Series F550L laptop which I want to record audio with, but for some reason, the stereo mic I am connecting to the 3.5mm audio jack is being recognised as a headset. This leaves me with a mono recording, and unable to play back sound while the mic is connected.
The mic is a SoundMAX Superbeam manufactured by Asus for Andrea Electronics.
What should I do?

It sounds like you are either in the wrong jack or the laptop's jacks were wired incorrectly at the factory.

Actually, I found what the problem is.
Asus laptops are setup to take either headphones or headsets.
The SoundMAX superbeam is designed to only work in a designated mic in port.
I'll just record using the desktop. It works there.
