Question mini digital box remote programming without box?

I have two extra remotes that were for my old TWC mini digital box which quit working. The existing same type remotes I have still work to turn the tvs on and off, but I cannot figure out how to program the extra remotes. I've tried using some codes I found, but now am wondering if I have to first have them linked to the actual digital box before being able to do that? I think that is probably the issue, but wanted to check just to make sure before I just tossed the remotes and looked for some remotes just for the TVs.

I found out, you must have the box to program the remotes.
