missing hard drive

I HAD TO REINSTALLED WINDOWS 7 AND THEN UPGRADED TO WINDOWS 10. I DID NOT NOTICE THAT EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE WAS TURNED ON. WHEN I GOT READY TO RECOVER FROM BACK UP ON E.H., NOTHING WAS THERE. I CHANGE MY DRIVE TO E: STILL NOTHING. HAVE I LOST OVER THREE YEARS OF WORK? PLEASE HELP!

Recover from backup.....via what application, specifically?

Does the external drive show up as attached in Win10?

Try connecting it to another USB port, need to see if drive even detected/identified first....

If so, can you right click, and open/explore it?

Data should be there as long as it was not formatted, and, even then, some data might be recoverable as long as you do not write over it....
