Mobo Core Unlcoker?

Can someone tell me what they mean when they say Core Unlocker in the features of a mobo? Isn't it a feature dependent on the BIOS/CPU? To see what I am talking about: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130269

The Core Unlocker feature has a chance of unlocking locked non-defective CPU cores which were essentially shut down by AMD, it's a matter of luck though, and only applies to the Phenom II X2, Phenom II X3, Phenom II X4 and Athlon II X3 and Athlon II X4s. (The Athlon II X4 may be able to be turned into a Phenom II X4).

Hi.

Core unlock depends of the mobo's chipset (not problem with that mobo) and the CPU but bear in mind that if u buy a CPU with 3 cores or 2 cores if because that CPU isn't fully stable as a quad core so if u want a quad core, or tri core is better buy a real one.

an addition to whats said above, always buy the chip you want, never buy a cpu expecting it to unlock , however if you decide you wans a 2 or 3 core and find you can unlokc it to become a 4 core then great, consider it a bonus. also as noted usually these chips have disabled cores for a reason so do not expect to be able to overclock much if any or expect to have it function to 100% even if the core does unlock

Luckily for me I went for the Athlon II X3 425 [since that's the only available option in Athlon II X3] & enabled the Core Unlcoker feature in the BIOS & voila it turned into a Phenom II X4 B25 processor. Now all I have to do is understand & fine tune the motherboard [MSI 880G-E 45] settings with that of the processor. I have asked the same question in a different thread.[MSI 880G-E 45]
