My motherboard speaker is making knocking sounds. I tried one stick of ram at a time, neither worked. some times it boots to bios, most times it does not. The cpu gets very hot. I have a fan. it is working. I got new thermal paste, and applied it, and it still gets hot, and does not power on, and makes that knocking sound.
BTW, this is a desktop. It is a Gigabyte motherboard (b85m-ds3h).

We need your entire system specs to be able to better understand your system and make informed suggestions about how to fix it. Also is this a new build or an existing one that just started to have this issue?

So here are the beep codes for your motherboard: AWARD BIOS 1short beep :System normal 2 short beep :CMOS Error 1 long beep and 1 short beep:Memory error 1 long beep and 2 short beep:Graphic card error 1 long beep and 3 short beep :AGP error 1 long beep and 9 short beep :Memory Error Continuous long beep :Memory not correctly installed Continuous short beep :Power supply unit failed

Here is another thread the sounds like a similar issue: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2782872/b85m-ds3h-beep-code.html

Today I found out more - I have one stick of RAM in. If I boot it up, it goes into bios. When I shut down and boot up, it fails to go into BIOS. I restart again, and it still fails. I move the ram module into another slot, and it boots into bios. I shutdown and it does not. I restart, and it still does not. so I move it back into the other slot. it boots. i restart, and it doesn't. I restart again, and it still doesn't. I restart again, and it still doesn't.

i boot into the os (windows). I shutdown and turn back on. it doesn't bios. i remove the stick and put it in the other slot. i boot, and i get to the os, and restart, and I am back in windows again.

EDIT: sorry - this is not a solution. it is a reply.
