What is your budget?
~$750(USD)

How much battery life do you need?
Decent charge when running conservative cpu. I figure most laptops nowadays will run on low cpu settings for at least 10 hours right?

Do you want to play games with your laptop?

Team fortress 2 / Left 4 dead 2 / Battlefield bad company 2 / CS:S (basically any Source-engine game) on high settings.

What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo / Video editing, watching movies, Etc.)

Sometimes schoolwork (openoffice documents, etc) but mostly gaming.

How long do you want to keep your laptop?
I would like future-proofing for at least 7 years. (gee, thanks moore.)

Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like.
I've had some bad run-ins with Toshiba laptops and would prefer to stay away from them. (Like the toshiba overheating line)

What country do you live in?
United states

Other:
I'm not looking to render Crysis, I want something that can play most MP-FPS/MMOs on decent settings. Most document editing will be done on ubuntu, but I'd like win7 x64 (I think that's the only user windows version being shipped right now?). I don't need overkill so obviously nothing crazy like a i7 EE, especially not playing old Source-engine games. This will be a laptop I'd take to lan parties, not a replacement for a desktop.

Solution
Not so much. Especially none that will also play games decently.

L4D2 and CS:S will run well on just about any discrete graphics card - like a HD 5470.
Lenovo IdeaPad Z565 Turion II P540(2.4GHz) 4GB RAM 500GB HDD 15.6" 1366x768 ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 $620
TF2 should be playable on high settings, but just barely. But that HD 5470 would only get you low settings on BF:BC2 and struggle a bit to be playable.

To get BF:BC2 on high settings you're looking at something with a HD 5670 or better graphics card.
Lenovo Ideapad Y560 06465LU Core i5 480M(2.66GHz) 4GB RAM 500GB 15.6" 1366x768 & Mobility Radeon HD 5730 $800

You can expect to get around from 2hrs (DVD viewing) to 3hrs (web browsing) battery life with the standard 6 cell battery.
As long as you're still playing the same games 7yrs from now you should do OK for longevity.

I thought laptop batteries lasted longer nowadays. Well, I can't forsee playing the same games that long from now. As far as the 5650+ laptops you mentioned are concerned, is there a big difference between the Lenovo and the HP's performance?
Also is Levono a respectable brand, or are they known for poor craftsmanship- I've never had an experience with them.
