i just got given a msi apache pro ge72vr laptop in pretty banged up shape. after opening up and reconnecting the power button and turning it on the keyboard indicator leds and fans spun up but no screen and it also didn't work on an external display. any ideas?

Solution
Well, when you were inside it, or who ever before you was and disconnected the power button, could have easily also disconnected, loosened, pinched, damaged, etc., the cable that connects the display. So you may want to start there.

Should that not work/help, and you are certain you connected the external display correctly (used a monitor, turned off the laptop before connecting it, turned on the laptop and made sure there wasn't a button on the keyboard to change monitors) then it could be the graphics driver, the GPU, or the motherboard.

You can try hitting CTRL + SHIFT + WIN + B to try and reset your graphics driver as possible fix.

If none of this works, then you are looking at either the GPU being replaced and/or the motherboard

thank you so much for your answer i looked at the cable and i didn't see any damage but it didnt seem to fix the issue

also there is no os on the laptop currently as the past owner has removed the hard drives but i put a 1tb laptop hard drive in there.
Any last ideas maybe a way to switch it to the intel graphics?

Even if there is no damage, the fact that things were moved around inside could have lead to the connection being loose at either end.

You will need a drive with an OS to try this, so if the drive is blank, it won't work.

You can try starting up in "Safe Mode" and see if it will load and show on the screen.
