MSI GX660R Laptop will not turn on

Laptop Model: MSI GX660R
Operating System: WIndocv
Problem: Laptop will not turn on.

Symptoms: Battery charging symbol lights up when laptop is connected to outlet.
When turned on, Crescent Moon symbol lights up and lap top does not seem to turn on.

Tried:
1. Removing battery, removing charger, pushing power button for 10 seconds, then replacing battery and turning laptop on (no effect)
2. Removing all RAM sticks (3 x 2 gb sticks) then turning lap top on. Expected error beeps of some sort but intstead same symptoms as above (no laptop screen, charging battery and sleep symbols lit up)

Just got the laptop back from a local repair shop. They claim motherboard is broken and it will cost 800 dollars for parts and labor to repair it. Time to shop for a new one or worth salvaging?
