MSI vs ASUS Gaming Laptops: GTX 970M

Right now, I'm deciding whether or not to buy an ASUS or MSI gaming laptop, each with a 970M. Each laptop is under $1500.

The ASUS has 8 more gigs of RAM and an amazing design as well, not to mention cooling, and the fact that it is there new brand line, G751, so they may have a few tricks up their sleeve.

MSI has the all the "accessories", the keyboard (LED's Can dance to music!), sound, easier to clean/upgrade, et cetera. Which, in your opinions, are worth it?

My vote goes for the Asus!

Keep in mind that laptops are not as good as desktops for gaming.

Now, I know that laptops aren't comparable to desktops in terms of performance, but you'd be surprised. The 970/980M cards have about 75-80% of performance that their desktop cousins have. Which is incredible. Soon enough, they'll be on par with each other. It seems the attention is going towards mobile cards more than desktop ones, to be honest. Give it 3-4 years, and a laptop could be as powerful as a desktop. Not only that, your getting portability, a "monitor" (screen), a keyboard, and technically a mouse (touchpad) packed into a small, chassis. My vote goes for laptops, but yes, desktops are more powerful.

ASUS one. LED backlighting isn't even all that. Just get the one with better reviews and which costs less

True that. I'm leaning on ASUS. They apparently upgraded their cooling system, added on to the fact that the 980M is a lot cooler than an 880M, and they made the laptop 2 pounds less then their G750. And that design is just too sexy 😛. Thanks for your opinion. I'll keep this thread open for a while, until I'm sure of my choice. But thanks, still!

Thanks for your help guys! I know already that the ASUS is my choice, just read some reviews and it said that everything, from cooling t specs (obviously), had major upgrades, while making the laptop 2 pounds lighter 😀

Also, with the new additions of the 900 series, such as DSR (Dynamic Super Resolution), VXGI (Voxel Global Illumination), and MFAA (Multi-Framed Sample Anti-Aliasing), it's hard to skimp on that. Battery Boost has also been improved drastically. The GTX 970M/980M can actually game on battery while maintaining amazing frames. Something past gaming laptops fail to do efficiently.

Anyways, yeah, I'm getting ASUS. It's final!

The only disadvantage I see in G751 is that it is 1 pound heavier than G70. But yes I am also leaning toward ASUS. Another thing is that G751 releases on Nov 4 where as GT70 releases on Oct 17. I don't know if I have the patience to wait. 😀

Just wait for it. The ASUS has so many advantages, and also has a professional look/feel, to make it less subdue. If you were to get MSI, go GT72. And even then, the G750 cooled better than the GT72, and the G751 is said to be more efficient than the G750. Imagine!

October 17? That's my birthday 😀 But still, I'd wait the 2 weeks for the ASUS. It's just so good.

Problem is here in Canada G750 is at $120 to $400 more expensive than the G70 (both have 870m) depending on the store. Lucky for you guys in US.
I won't go with GT72 because it is too expensive.

That sucks. Have you ever heard of XoticPC? If you haven't, they're a PC reseller website that charges less than the actual cost of a system and lets you upgrade everything from screens to cooling systems. There pretty amazing. The best part is that they ship to Canada, I forget for how much, but I think an extra $50 is all

The G751JT CH71 model, that costs $1500, isn't up yet, but it should be around or at Nov. 4. With every system, they give a 3% discount and military discount as well, so fire away! 😀

I have thought of importing laptop from US but I am always worrying about what fees I will have to pay. I know I will need to pay tax upon laptop arrival, but it seems there might be other fees..basically I am just afraid of hidden fees.

XoticPC is one of the most trustworthy sites out there. The thing is, they offer international shipping only to Canada. For $60, you can get 1 year shipping coverage to Canada, 2 years $80, and 3 years $100. Trust me, no "hidden taxes" are paid. Even read the reviews, one man in Japan got his order delivered very quickly and stated that he paid as much as the price stated. Listen to me when I say that this is your best option. Option #2 is coming to the US and buying, last option should be paying the extra money or getting the MSI, which I advise against.

2 cents: Asus has a history of neglecting defective hardware. Buy an extended warranty if you go that route. (google search G75 shuts down randomly)
