My ASUS Laptop Won't Pick Up On Any External Microphones

A few years ago my dad was gracious enough to buy me an ASUS laptop. I am not super computer savvy and don't know all of the details of my laptop, but here is my issue anyway... I will try to explain as best I can.

Because my built-in microphone has terrible recording quality, I wanted to use an external microphone built into a headset - preferably. My two good friends bought me two totally different headsets with mics in them. First one I tried was a logitech with separate plug ins for the headphones and for the microphone. Problem is my laptop only has one jack. The headphones work great but my laptop simply WILL NOT pick up my microphone no matter what I do. I tried the other headset since that one has a single plug in that combines the mic and headphone signals. I figured that may work - but it didn't. Headphones worked, but the laptop didn't pick up any other mics besides the built in one.

I've disabled the built-in mic. I've had three different computer geeks look at my laptop in attempts to fix my issue. I'm starting to think I'm just gonna need to buy an audio adapter I can plug the headphones and mic into and then plug into one of my usb ports:

I need to know if this is my best course of action or if there are other solutions that won't cost me money. Thanks.

Sounds like your computer has an output only 3.5mm port and not an input/output one, which is what you would need to make it work with an external mic of any sort.

A work around is to do one of the following. 1. Get a headset/mic combo that has a USB connection instead or 2. Get an adapter that will convert the 3.5mm jack into a USB one that you can connect via the USB port. Something like this... https://www.amazon.com/LZYCO-External-connector-Headphone-Microphone/dp/B018YV3ALM/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1486193340&sr=8-9&keywords=3.5mm+to+usb+adapter

Thank you for answering. I suspected that these would be my only solutions. My car mechanic boyfriend suggested it had something to do with the drivers. I'll get my hands on an adapter and see what difference that makes for my issue.
