my dell vostro 1000 wont recognize a new 500 gigabyte hard drive?

I tried to install a bigger hard drive on my dell Vostro 1000 but my bios does not recognize it
neither windows 7 installation disc

Drive might not be formatted properly. Have had problems like that when purchasing used/bare drives. Try adding it to a working computer as a secondary drive and format it.
