What Windows version are you using? Should be pretty much the same for all versions actually. Right click the desktop, select display settings, scroll down to multiple displays and from the drop down box select "Extend these displays".
If that won't work, or if no second display is showing, then you may have to go into the BIOS and enable the external display output.
