Solved! My gateway nv52 locked hard drive

my gateway nv52 has been sitting for 18 months and when i powered it on,it asks for a HDD user password....i took it to a local tech who said that that happens after long periods of non-op..gateway wants to charge me $200.00 plus one way insured shipping charges..i dont have that kind of money. what can i do please help
